JPGkuvat is a term that refers to image files saved in the JPEG (or JPG) format. JPEG is a widely used standard for digital images, particularly for photographs and complex graphics. The Joint Photographic Experts Group developed the format, and its primary characteristic is its use of lossy compression. This means that when an image is saved as a JPEG, some of the original image data is discarded to reduce the file size. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing users to balance image quality with file size. Higher compression results in smaller files but can lead to a noticeable degradation in image quality, often appearing as blocky artifacts or blurring. Conversely, lower compression preserves more detail but results in larger files.

JPEG is known for its ability to represent a wide range of colors, making it suitable for photographic content. It is not ideal for images with sharp lines, text, or areas of solid color, as these can become distorted by the compression. For such images, lossless formats like PNG are often preferred. Despite its limitations, the efficiency of JPEG compression has made it the de facto standard for web images, digital cameras, and many other applications due to its balance of quality and manageable file sizes.
