One common method is mechanical treatment, which includes processes like sorting, shredding, and compacting. Sorting separates different types of waste, facilitating recycling or specialized treatment. Shredding reduces the size of waste for easier handling and further processing. Compacting decreases the volume of waste, making transportation and storage more efficient.

Biological treatment is another significant category, primarily used for organic waste. Composting and anaerobic digestion are key examples. Composting breaks down organic matter into a nutrient-rich soil amendment through aerobic decomposition. Anaerobic digestion decomposes organic material in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas (a renewable energy source) and digestate.

Thermal treatment involves the use of heat to manage waste. Incineration, for instance, burns waste at high temperatures, significantly reducing its volume and potentially generating energy. Pyrolysis and gasification are similar thermal processes that decompose waste in an oxygen-limited environment, producing synthesis gas or bio-oil.

Finally, chemical treatment methods are employed to neutralize or detoxify hazardous waste. These can include oxidation, reduction, or precipitation processes to render harmful substances less dangerous before disposal or further treatment.
