Jätehuoltoprosessi, also known as the waste management process, encompasses all activities involved in handling waste from its origin to ultimate disposal or recovery. The process is typically divided into several stages: collection, transport, segregation, treatment, and final disposal or recycling.

During the collection stage, waste is gathered from households, industries, and commercial facilities using dedicated collection vehicles or through voluntary drop-off points. Segregation occurs either at the source, where recyclables, organics and hazardous materials are separated, or later in sorting facilities. Proper segregation reduces contamination, improves recycling rates, and ensures that each waste stream is processed in the most suitable manner.

Treatment methods vary depending on the type of waste. Biological treatment processes, such as composting, are employed for organic matter, while mechanical and chemical processes—like shredding, grinding or chemical leaching—prepare other materials for recycling or disposal. Advanced technologies, including thermochemical processes like incineration and plasma gasification, are used for non-recyclable or hazardous wastes to reduce volume and recover energy.

The terminal phase involves landfilling, where treated waste is deposited in engineered sites designed to prevent leaching and gas emission. Alternatively, waste can be downcycled into new products. Throughout the process, monitoring of air, water, and soil quality, as well as adherence to local and national regulations, ensures environmental protection and public health.

Modern waste management also emphasizes a circular economy approach, aiming to recover resources, reduce landfill use, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions. Public participation, robust infrastructure, and continuous technological innovation are key to improving the efficiency and sustainability of the jätehuoltoprosessi.
