Sequences can be finite, containing a limited number of elements, or infinite, continuing indefinitely. The elements themselves can be of any type, such as numbers, letters, symbols, or even other sequences. Common examples include arithmetic sequences, where the difference between consecutive terms is constant, and geometric sequences, where the ratio between consecutive terms is constant.

In computer programming, sequences are fundamental data structures. Arrays, lists, and strings are all forms of sequences, enabling the storage and manipulation of ordered data. The position of an element within a sequence is typically identified by an index, often starting from zero. Operations on sequences include adding, removing, and accessing elements, as well as searching and sorting. The concept of ordered sets is essential for algorithms, data management, and various branches of theoretical and applied science.
