Jähmettynyt
Jähmettynyt is a Finnish adjective meaning “frozen,” “petrified,” or “turned to stone.” In geological contexts it describes organic material that has undergone mineralization, typically after burial in sediment, where the original tissues are replaced by silica, calcite, or other minerals. The process, known as permineralization or silicification, results in a fossil that retains the external morphology of the original organism while losing its original organic composition. Such specimens are valuable for paleontological research because they preserve fine structural details, allowing scientists to reconstruct ancient ecosystems and evolutionary relationships.
The term also appears in colloquial Finnish to describe situations, emotions, or objects that have become rigid,
Etymologically, jähmettynyt derives from the verb jähmettyä, which itself comes from the root jähmeä, meaning “hard”
Related Finnish terms include kivittyä (“to turn to stone”) and kowa (“solidified”). In broader linguistic comparison,
