Applications for acoustic insulation range from soundproofing walls and floors in homes and recording studios to improving the acoustics of public spaces. Electrical insulation is vital for safety, preventing the flow of electric current to unintended places. This is achieved by using materials with high electrical resistance, such as rubber, plastic, or ceramics, to cover electrical conductors.

The effectiveness of insulation is often measured by specific properties relevant to the type of insulation. For thermal insulation, this is typically the R-value, which indicates resistance to heat flow, or the U-value, which measures the rate of heat transfer. For acoustic insulation, sound transmission class (STC) ratings are used. The selection of the appropriate insulation depends on the specific application, desired performance, cost, and environmental considerations.
