Ittapäätteestä

Ittapäätteestä is a Finnish term that translates to "remote terminal" or "terminal device." In a general computing context, it refers to a device that relies on another computer, known as the host, for its primary processing power. The ittäpääte itself typically handles input and output operations, such as displaying data on a screen and receiving input from a keyboard or mouse.

Historically, ittäpäätteet were more common in the era of mainframe computing. Users would connect to a powerful central computer from a simpler terminal, allowing many individuals to share the resources of a single, expensive machine. These terminals were often "dumb terminals," meaning they had very little processing capability of their own and merely transmitted data to and from the host.

With the advent of personal computers, the concept of a dedicated ittäpääte became less prevalent for general-purpose computing. However, the principle of remote access and processing continues to be relevant in modern technology. Examples include thin clients, which are still somewhat reliant on a server, and the concept of cloud computing where users access resources and applications hosted on remote servers. In these scenarios, the user's device acts as an ittäpääte, interacting with powerful remote infrastructure. The term itself, while perhaps less frequently used in everyday tech discussions, still encapsulates the fundamental idea of a device whose intelligence and functionality are largely derived from a separate, more capable system.
