Itsevarmasti

Itsevarmasti is the Estonian term for self-immolation, the act of setting oneself on fire as a deliberate, symbolic act of protest or, in some cases, a suicide. Such acts are extreme forms of political or social expression and are internationally reported as either spontaneous or planned demonstrations.

Across history, self-immolation has appeared in many regions and periods. Notable modern cases include Thích Quảng Đức (1963) in Vietnam, who burned himself in protest against anti-Buddhist policies; Jan Palach (1969) in Czechoslovakia, as a protest against the invasion of his country; and Mohamed Bouazizi (2010) in Tunisia, whose act is widely credited with sparking the Arab Spring.

Motives vary but commonly involve opposition to oppression, censorship, or economic hardship, and aims to draw international attention to a grievance. The acts are highly controversial, widely condemned by authorities, and can trigger large-scale political or social responses. Some observers view them as powerful moral statements; others emphasize the human cost and the potential moral hazard of imitation.

Legal and ethical considerations differ by country. In many jurisdictions self-immolation is treated under suicide or arson laws, and while the act itself is violent and fatal for many, it raises questions about mental health support and the rights of individuals to express political views. The aftermath for families and communities can be profound, including stigma, memorialization, and policy debates.
