Itsesarjärjestäytyminen, known in English as self-organization, is a process where order or coordination arises spontaneously from the interactions of the individual components of a system. This can occur in a wide variety of systems, both natural and artificial, without external control or a central authority dictating the overall structure or behavior. The key characteristic is that the global order emerges from local interactions.

Examples of self-organization can be found in physics, such as the formation of crystals from atoms or molecules, or the patterns seen in fluid dynamics like convection cells. In biology, flocks of birds or schools of fish exhibit self-organized behavior, where each individual follows simple rules based on its neighbors, leading to complex collective movement. Ant colonies are another classic biological example, with individual ants' simple actions leading to the efficient construction of nests and foraging.

In social systems, self-organization can be observed in the formation of markets, the spontaneous emergence of traffic jams, or the spread of information through social networks. Computer science also utilizes principles of self-organization, for instance, in distributed algorithms or swarm intelligence systems. The study of self-organization often involves analyzing the feedback loops and emergent properties of complex systems, seeking to understand how complexity can arise from simplicity.
