Itsekäyttöisyys, often translated as self-centeredness or egocentrism, refers to a cognitive bias or personality trait where an individual's perspective is central to their understanding of the world. This means they tend to view situations and events primarily through the lens of their own needs, desires, and experiences, often with difficulty in truly understanding or appreciating the viewpoints of others.

This trait can manifest in various ways. Individuals high in itsekäyttöisyys might struggle with empathy, finding it hard to put themselves in someone else's shoes or to consider how their actions might affect others. They may also exhibit a strong sense of entitlement, believing they deserve special treatment or that their opinions are inherently more valid. In social interactions, this can lead to behaviors such as dominating conversations, interrupting others, or showing a lack of interest in topics not directly related to them.

While itsekäyttöisyys can be a normal developmental stage in young children, as they learn to differentiate themselves from others, in adults it can become problematic if it significantly impacts relationships and social functioning. It is distinct from selfishness, which implies a deliberate act of prioritizing one's own interests over others, though the two can overlap. Itsekäyttöisyys is more about a fundamental way of perceiving and processing information, where the self is the default reference point.
