Itni

Itni is a degree determiner used in Hindustani languages, notably Hindi and Urdu, to express extent, amount, or emphasis. It functions to modify adjectives, nouns, or verbs, similar to the English "this much" or "so much." Itni corresponds to the feminine singular form of the related word pair itna/itne, with itna used for masculine singular and itne for masculine plural.

In grammar, itni agrees with the gender and number of the noun phrase it modifies. For example, itni often appears before a feminine singular noun or adjective, as in itni khubsurat ladki (such a beautiful girl) or itni mehnat ki (put in so much effort). The masculine equivalent is itna (masculine singular), and the masculine plural form is itne (masculine plural). The forms change to reflect the gender and number of the head noun, while the underlying meaning remains the same: a high degree or large quantity.

Itni is widely used across both standard Hindi and Urdu, and is common in everyday speech, journalism, literature, and media. In Urdu orthography it is written as اتنی, and in Devanagari as इतनी. The word can appear in combinations with various adjectives and nouns to convey intensity, scale, or surprise, and it often appears in colloquial expressions and formal prose alike.
