Itneg

Itneg is a collective term for a group of indigenous ethnic communities residing primarily in the mountain regions of Abra and some parts of northern Benguet in the Philippines. The name "Itneg" is derived from the local word "neg," meaning "people," with various subgroups identified by their specific dialects, customs, and territories, including the Apayao, Batak, Isneg, and others.

Traditionally, the Itneg people are known for their rich cultural heritage, intricate weaving, and craftsmanship. They primarily engage in subsistence agriculture, cultivating rice, root crops, and vegetables, and maintain a strong spiritual connection to their environment. Their social structures often feature kinship-based communities with unique rituals and oral traditions.

Language-wise, the Itneg peoples speak several dialects classified under the Northern Cordilleran languages. Despite modernization pressures, many communities continue to preserve their linguistic and cultural practices.

Historically, the Itneg have maintained a distinct identity characterized by their elaborate agricultural rituals, traditional attire, and handicrafts like basketry and textile weaving. Although influences from outside cultures have impacted their way of life, efforts are ongoing within the community to preserve and promote their cultural heritage.

Today, the Itneg communities face challenges related to modernization, land rights, and cultural preservation. Various government and non-government initiatives aim to support their rights, cultural continuity, and socio-economic development. The Itneg remain an integral part of the Philippines’ diverse indigenous groups, contributing significantly to the nation's cultural mosaic.
