Itasca
Itasca is a toponym used in several locations in the United States. The name is most closely associated with Minnesota, where Itasca County and Itasca State Park lie, and with small communities named Itasca in Illinois and Texas. The name was coined in the 1830s by explorer Henry Schoolcraft, who used it to name Lake Itasca, the headwaters of the Mississippi River, and it was later applied to surrounding areas. Lake Itasca is within Itasca State Park, established in 1891 as Minnesota’s first state park, and the park preserves the river's source and offers trails, boardwalks, and camping.
