Itaparica

Itaparica is a municipality in the state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil, situated on the western shore of the Bay of All Saints. The municipality covers an area of about 378 square kilometers and had a population of approximately 94,000 inhabitants according to the most recent census. Governance is carried out by a mayor and municipal council, with the current mayor serving a four‑year term.

The town’s history dates back to the seventeenth century, when Portuguese colonists settled the area and established a sugarcane plantation economy. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, small industries such as salt extraction and fishing grew alongside agriculture. The municipality became an official administrative unit in the early twentieth century and has since developed a diversified local economy that includes commerce, services, and a growing tourism sector.

Itaparica is also the name of a nearby island, the largest in the Bay of All Saints, which is a popular seaside destination. The island is known for its beaches, historical churches, and traditional Bahian cuisine. Tourism infrastructure on the island caters to both domestic and international visitors, with accommodations ranging from small guesthouses to larger hotels. Cultural events such as music festivals and religious celebrations reflect the blend of indigenous, African, and European influences characteristic of the region.
