Isäntäspesifisyys, a Finnish term that translates to host specificity, refers to the degree to which a parasite or pathogen is restricted to a particular host or a narrow range of hosts. This concept is fundamental in evolutionary biology and ecology, particularly in understanding host-parasite interactions and the dynamics of infectious diseases.

High host specificity means a parasite can only infect and reproduce on one or a very limited number of host species. For example, some viruses or bacteria are highly specific, only able to infect a single cell type or organism. Conversely, low host specificity, often referred to as generalism, allows a parasite to infect a broad array of host species. This can be seen in many free-living microorganisms or generalist herbivores.

The evolution of host specificity is driven by a complex interplay of factors. For the parasite, developing adaptations to exploit a specific host can lead to more efficient resource acquisition and transmission. However, it also creates a dependency, making the parasite vulnerable if its host population declines.
