Isäntänimille
Isäntänimille, often translated as "host names" or "landlord names" in English, refers to a specific naming convention historically used in Finland, particularly in rural areas. It is a patronymic or matronymic system where a person's surname is derived from the name of the farm or estate they own or are associated with, rather than their paternal or maternal given name's lineage.
In this system, the primary identifier for a family or individual became the name of the farm.
The use of isäntänimille was prevalent before the widespread adoption of fixed, inherited surnames in Finland.
