Isosyanaattikomponentit are chemical compounds that contain the isocyanate functional group, characterized by the structure R-N=C=O, where R is an organic radical. This highly reactive group is central to the chemistry of isocyanates and their widespread industrial applications.

The primary use of isocyanate components is in the production of polyurethanes. Polyurethanes are versatile polymers formed through the reaction of di- or polyisocyanates with polyols. This reaction, known as polyaddition, creates a urethane linkage, forming the backbone of polyurethane materials. These materials find applications in a vast array of products, including foams (rigid and flexible), coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers.

Commonly encountered isocyanate components include toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). TDI is often used in the production of flexible polyurethane foams for furniture and bedding, while MDI is prevalent in rigid foams for insulation in construction and appliances, as well as in coatings and adhesives. Other isocyanates, such as hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), are used in applications requiring high performance, such as automotive coatings and high-strength elastomers.

Due to their reactivity, isocyanate components can pose health hazards. Inhalation of isocyanate vapors or aerosols can lead to respiratory irritation and sensitization, potentially causing occupational asthma. Skin contact can cause irritation and allergic reactions. Therefore, strict safety measures, including proper ventilation and personal protective equipment, are essential when handling these chemicals. Regulatory bodies establish exposure limits to protect worker health.
