Isopleters

Isopleters are tools or algorithms used to generate isopleths—lines or surfaces of constant value—from a scalar field. They are employed to visualize spatial distributions of quantities such as temperature, elevation, or chemical concentration by organizing data into discrete contours or layers.

In two dimensions, isopleters typically apply interpolation to sample the field at regular grid intervals and connect points that share the target value, using methods such as marching squares or linear interpolation between grid cells. In three dimensions, analogous techniques like marching cubes can produce iso-surfaces. Modern implementations may also produce smoothed contours or shaded regions between lines to emphasize gradients.

Applications of isopleters span multiple disciplines. In meteorology, they generate isotherms and isobars to illustrate atmospheric conditions. In geology and geophysics, they are used to map elevation, density, or mineral concentration. In medical imaging, isovalues help segment tissues in CT or MRI data. In environmental science and engineering, they visualize pollution plumes, soil moisture, or other scalar fields. In computer graphics, similar ideas contribute to texture mapping and shading algorithms.

Notes and limitations: the term isopleter is not universally standardized and is sometimes used informally to describe contour-producing tools.
