Isomeerimääriä refers to the number of possible isomers for a given chemical compound. Isomers are molecules that have the same molecular formula but a different arrangement of atoms. This difference in arrangement can lead to distinct physical and chemical properties. The number of possible isomers can vary significantly depending on the complexity of the molecule and the types of isomerism present.

For simple molecules with few atoms and limited structural possibilities, the number of isomers might be small, or even just one. As the number of atoms and the complexity of the bonding increase, the potential for different spatial arrangements and connectivity grows, leading to a rapidly increasing number of isomers. For instance, a molecule with a linear carbon chain will have fewer isomers than a branched or cyclic molecule with the same number of carbon atoms.

Stereoisomerism, where atoms have the same connectivity but differ in their spatial orientation, further contributes to the isomer count. This includes enantiomers (non-superimposable mirror images) and diastereomers (stereoisomers that are not enantiomers). Geometric isomerism, a type of diastereomerism, arises from restricted rotation around double bonds or within rings. The total number of isomers for a compound is the sum of all possible structural isomers and stereoisomers. Calculating theoretical isomer counts is a complex combinatorial problem in chemistry, often aided by computational methods for larger molecules.
