Isäntälaitteita, or host devices, refers to a broad category of electronic devices that initiate communication or control in a network. These devices are distinct from peripheral devices, which typically respond to commands from a host. In essence, the host device is the central intelligence or controller in a system. Examples range from personal computers and servers that manage networks and access resources to smartphones that connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth networks. Even simpler devices like smart thermostats or programmable logic controllers can function as isäntälaitteita when they initiate actions or control other connected devices.

The role of an isäntälaite is to provide the processing power, memory, and software necessary to manage and direct the flow of data and commands.
