Iritare

Iritare is a name that has appeared in ethnographic and linguistic sources to refer to an indigenous group and an associated language of the Amazon region. The exact identity and geographic range of the Iritare are unclear, as sources use varying spellings and sometimes refer to neighboring groups.

Language is the most uncertain aspect of Iritare. The Iritare language is poorly attested, with few or no published descriptions, word lists, or grammatical analyses. Its genetic affiliation—whether it forms part of a known language family, is a language isolate, or represents a mixed variety—remains uncertain.

History and current status are also unclear. Documentation of Iritare spans parts of the colonial to modern ethnographic record, but information is sparse. It is not well established whether any community currently identifies as Iritare or whether the name survives primarily as a historical label used by outsiders or in past studies.
