Iranis

Iranis is a rarely used plural form that can refer to people associated with Iran, but it is not the standard English demonym. The typical term for native or resident people of Iran is Iranian. The adjective Irani exists in various languages and in Persian (ایرانی) it means “of Iran” or “Iranian.” In English, Irani sometimes appears as a surname or given name, and in some transliterations or historic texts the plural Iranis may be encountered, but it is uncommon in contemporary usage.

Iran is a country in Western Asia with a population of about 85 million. Its inhabitants represent a diverse mix of ethnic and linguistic groups, including Persians, Azeris, Kurds, Lurs, Baluch, Arabs, and Turkmen. This diversity translates into a wide range of cultural practices, languages, and regional traditions. Persian (Farsi) is the predominant language and serves as the cultural and literary lingua franca, while many other languages are spoken across the country.

In modern usage, “Iranis” is rarely employed in English to describe Iran’s people. For most purposes, “Iranians” is preferred, while “Irani” may be used as an adjective or surname in various contexts.
