Ioriniams
Ioriniams are a group of microscopic organisms classified within the phylum Acantharea of the domain Eukarya. First described in the early twentieth century by French marine biologist René Rouch, the genus derives its name from the Greek root “iorion,” meaning “fisher,” reflecting their predatory behavior. Modern genetic analysis places ioriniams in the clade of heterotrophic protists, characterized by their unique spiny ectoplasmic networks.
Morphologically, ioriniams possess a spherical to ovoid cell body ranging from 30 to 85 micrometres in diameter.
Ecologically, ioriniams contribute to carbon cycling by consuming microbial biomass and transferring it to higher trophic
