Ionometry

Ionometry is a branch of analytical chemistry focused on the quantitative determination of ions in a solution. It involves measuring the activity or concentration of specific ions through various electrochemical and titrimetric techniques. The primary goal is to accurately assess the ionic composition of liquids, which is essential in fields such as environmental analysis, medicine, and industrial processes.

The most common method in ionometry is potentiometry, which uses ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) to detect specific ions. An ion-selective electrode is a sensor that responds selectively to a particular ion, producing a potential difference proportional to the ion’s activity in the solution. Potentiometric measurements are often used for pH monitoring (hydrogen ions), as well as in determining ions like sodium, potassium, chloride, and nitrate.

Another significant technique within ionometry is titration, often performed with ion-selective indicators or electrodes. These titrations allow for the precise quantification of ions by reacting a solution of unknown concentration against a standard solution of known concentration until a specific endpoint is reached.

Ionometry is valued for its sensitivity, specificity, and rapid analysis capabilities. It offers advantages over other methods, especially when direct measurement of ions is required without extensive sample preparation.
