Ioniyhteydellä
Ioniyhteydellä is a Finnish term that translates to "ionic bond" in English. It describes a type of chemical bond formed between oppositely charged ions. This typically occurs between a metal and a nonmetal. Metals tend to lose electrons, forming positively charged ions called cations, while nonmetals tend to gain electrons, forming negatively charged ions called anions. The electrostatic attraction between these oppositely charged ions creates the ionic bond.
Ionic compounds are characterized by their crystalline structure, where ions are arranged in a repeating lattice.
