Ioniteknologiassa refers to the field of ion technology. One significant application is in ion implantation, a process used extensively in semiconductor manufacturing to modify the electrical properties of materials. By accelerating ions to high energies and embedding them into a substrate, specific dopant profiles can be precisely controlled, which is crucial for creating transistors and other electronic components. Another area is ion beam analysis, where beams of ions are used to probe the surface and near-surface composition and structure of materials. Techniques like Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) fall under this category.

In environmental science, ion technology plays a role in air and water purification. Ionizers, for instance, can be used to remove particulate matter from the air by charging the particles, causing them to adhere to surfaces or be collected. Ion exchange resins are widely employed in water treatment to remove dissolved ions, such as heavy metals or hardness-causing minerals. Furthermore, ion propulsion systems are a form of spacecraft propulsion that generate thrust by expelling ions at high velocities. This technology offers high efficiency for long-duration space missions.
