Plasma generated through ionization can modify the surface properties of materials, enhancing adhesion, cleaning, or imparting antimicrobial characteristics. This is utilized in industries ranging from electronics manufacturing to medical device production. Furthermore, ionization principles are fundamental to mass spectrometry, a technique used to identify and quantify chemical compounds by measuring the mass-to-charge ratio of ionized molecules. Ionization is also a key component in certain types of lighting, such as fluorescent lamps and neon signs, where an electric current is passed through a gas to excite its atoms and produce light.
