IodoBeads

IodoBeads are a medical device designed to deliver radioactive iodine directly to thyroid tissue, primarily used in the treatment of thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism. Developed by Blue Earth Diagnostics, these tiny, spherical beads are composed of a biodegradable polymer core coated with radioactive iodine-131. The beads are injected into the thyroid gland via a catheter during a procedure known as selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) or radioembolization.

The primary application of IodoBeads is in the treatment of thyroid cancer, particularly for patients with metastatic thyroid cancer that has spread to the liver. The beads emit beta radiation, which damages cancerous cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. This targeted approach minimizes exposure to other organs, reducing potential side effects compared to systemic treatments like external radiation or oral radioactive iodine.

In addition to cancer treatment, IodoBeads have been explored for managing hyperthyroidism, particularly in cases where conventional treatments such as antithyroid medications or thyroidectomy are not suitable. The procedure involves injecting the beads directly into the overactive thyroid tissue, allowing for localized radiation therapy.

The use of IodoBeads requires careful planning, including imaging studies to map the thyroid tissue and determine the optimal dosage. The beads are administered under fluoroscopic guidance to ensure precise placement. Following the procedure, patients typically undergo monitoring for side effects, which may include fatigue, nausea, or localized pain at the injection site.
