Iodine-supplemented refers to the practice of adding iodine to food or salt to increase its iodine content. This is a public health measure aimed at preventing iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs). Iodine is an essential trace mineral that the body needs for the production of thyroid hormones, which play a crucial role in metabolism, growth, and development. In many parts of the world, the soil and water have naturally low levels of iodine, leading to a widespread deficiency in populations that rely on locally sourced food.

The most common form of iodine supplementation is iodized salt, where a small amount of iodine is added to table salt. This method has been highly effective in reducing IDDs globally. Other foods can also be supplemented with iodine, though salt is the most widespread and cost-effective vehicle. Iodine deficiency can lead to a range of health problems, including goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland) and, more significantly, impaired cognitive development, especially in children. Severe deficiency during pregnancy can result in cretinism, a form of intellectual disability.

The World Health Organization and other health organizations recommend universal salt iodization as a primary strategy for preventing iodine deficiency. The appropriate level of iodine in supplemented foods is carefully monitored to ensure adequate intake without causing adverse effects. While iodine deficiency is a global concern, some regions have achieved significant success in its elimination through widespread supplementation programs.
