The word derives from the Latin root *invito* (to invite) combined with the medieval suffix *-assero*, which in that period signified a ceremonial or legal status. Used primarily in the Veneto region, invitassero invitations were dispatched by lords, bishops, and wealthy guilds to summon nobles and clergy to assemblies, feasts, or judicial proceedings. The invitations were typically documentaries written on parchment, sealed with wax and bearing a distinctive crest or monogram, indicating the authority of the issuer and the solemnity of the request.
