Inversioongelmien, often translated as "inversion problems" in English, refers to a class of problems in mathematics and other scientific disciplines where the goal is to determine the causes from the observed effects. This is in contrast to forward problems, where the causes are known and the effects are predicted.

For instance, in seismology, a forward problem might involve simulating how seismic waves travel through a known Earth model. An inversion problem, however, would use recorded seismic wave data from earthquakes to infer the structure of the Earth's interior, such as the location of faults or the composition of different layers.

These problems are generally more challenging than forward problems because they are often ill-posed. This means that a unique solution may not exist, or the solution may be highly sensitive to small errors in the observed data. To overcome these difficulties, various mathematical techniques are employed, including regularization methods that introduce constraints or prior information to guide the solution towards a plausible outcome.

They are crucial for understanding complex systems where direct observation of underlying causes is impossible or impractical.
