Inventarmanagement, often referred to as inventory management, is the planning, organizing, and controlling of a company's inventory. It encompasses raw materials, work-in-progress, finished goods, and MRO supplies across the supply chain, with the aim of ensuring product availability while minimizing holding costs and capital tied up.

Core techniques include perpetual inventory tracking, ABC analysis to prioritize items, economic order quantity, safety stock, and reorder point calculations. Inventory is typically managed through approaches such as just-in-time, Kanban, and cycle counting to maintain accuracy.

Modern inventarmanagement relies on information systems such as ERP and WMS, using barcode or RFID scanning, real-time data, and analytics to monitor stock levels, lead times, and demand forecasts. Integration with procurement, production planning, and distribution is essential.

Key performance indicators include inventory turnover, days sales of inventory, carrying costs, stockouts, and service level. Effective management seeks to maximize customer service while minimizing excess stock and obsolescence.

Challenges include demand volatility, supplier reliability, forecast accuracy, product life cycles, spoilage, and shrinkage. Best practices involve accurate data, regular audits such as cycle counts, classification of items by value and criticality, and aligning inventory policy with broader supply chain strategy.
