These systems can be deployed in various forms, including network-based (NIDS/NIPS) which monitor network traffic, and host-based (HIDS/HIPS) which monitor individual devices. NIDS/NIPS are typically placed at strategic points in the network to observe traffic flowing between different segments, while HIDS/HIPS reside on endpoints to monitor system calls, file integrity, and application logs.
