Inträngningsdjupet

Inträngningsdjupet, often translated as penetration depth or skin depth, is a physical concept relevant in the study of electromagnetic waves and their interaction with conductive materials. It describes the depth into a conductor at which the amplitude of an electromagnetic wave has decreased to 1/e (approximately 37%) of its value at the surface. This phenomenon is a consequence of the conductor's resistance, which causes the electromagnetic wave to be attenuated as it propagates inward.

The inträngningsdjupet is inversely proportional to the square root of the product of the material's conductivity, permeability, and the angular frequency of the electromagnetic wave. Higher conductivity, higher permeability, and lower frequency all lead to a greater inträngningsdjupet, meaning the wave penetrates further into the material. Conversely, materials with low conductivity, like insulators, exhibit a very large inträngningsdjupet, effectively preventing significant penetration of electromagnetic waves.

This principle has practical implications in various fields. In radio frequency engineering, it explains why certain frequencies can only penetrate a limited distance into conductors, influencing antenna design and shielding effectiveness. For AC power transmission, it explains why current tends to flow on the surface of conductors at high frequencies, a phenomenon known as the skin effect, which increases the effective resistance of the wire. In metallurgy, understanding inträngningsdjupet is important for processes like induction heating and surface hardening, where electromagnetic fields are used to heat specific depths of a material.
