Intertestualità

Intertestualità, or intertextuality, is a concept in literary and cultural studies referring to the shaping of a text's meaning through its relationship with other texts. It involves the ways in which texts reference, cite, or echo other texts, creating a web of interconnected meaning and interpretation. Intertextuality can be explicit, such as quotations or direct references, or implicit, involving allusions and stylistic echoes that require the reader to recognize the connection.

The term was first formalized by the French philosopher and literary theorist Julia Kristeva in the late 1960s, building on the ideas of Mikhail Bakhtin. Kristeva argued that no text exists in isolation; instead, every text is a mosaic of references and influences deriving from prior works. This interconnectedness enhances the richness of meaning, allowing texts to converse across time and cultures and encouraging multiple layers of interpretation.

Intertextuality manifests across various media, including literature, film, art, and digital content. It serves various functions, such as paying homage, critiquing, or reinterpreting previous works. It also fosters a dialogic relationship with the audience, prompting active interpretation and engagement.

Critics of intertextuality suggest that excessive reliance on references can make texts too dependent on prior knowledge, potentially alienating some readers. Nonetheless, it remains a fundamental concept for understanding how texts communicate and evolve within broader cultural and artistic ecosystems. Overall, intertestualità highlights the interconnected and dynamic nature of cultural production and the continuous dialogue between past and present works.
