Interstitiaalivirheitä

Interstitiaalivirheitä, known in English as interstitial defects, are a type of point defect found in crystalline solids. These defects occur when an atom, ion, or molecule is located in an interstitial site within the crystal lattice. An interstitial site is a space between the regularly positioned atoms of a crystal. Normally, these spaces are empty, but if a foreign atom or even an extra atom of the host material itself occupies one, it creates an interstitial defect.

The presence of interstitial defects can significantly alter the properties of a material. For example, they can increase the electrical resistance of metals by scattering conduction electrons. In semiconductors, interstitial impurities can act as dopants, either increasing or decreasing the conductivity depending on the type of impurity and the host material. Diffusion rates in solids are also affected by interstitial defects, as atoms can move through the lattice by occupying interstitial sites. This type of diffusion is often referred to as interstitial diffusion.

Interstitial defects can arise during crystal growth, through plastic deformation, or by exposure to radiation. The size of the interstitial atom relative to the interstitial site plays a crucial role. If the interstitial atom is too large, it can cause significant strain in the lattice, leading to higher energy and instability. Conversely, small interstitial atoms, like hydrogen in metals, can be accommodated with less strain. Understanding and controlling interstitial defects is important in materials science for tailoring material properties for specific applications.
