Interstitiaalivirheitä, known in English as interstitial defects, are a type of point defect found in crystalline solids. These defects occur when an atom, ion, or molecule is located in an interstitial site within the crystal lattice. An interstitial site is a space between the regularly positioned atoms of a crystal. Normally, these spaces are empty, but if a foreign atom or even an extra atom of the host material itself occupies one, it creates an interstitial defect.
