Interpretantti

Interpretantti is the term used in Finnish to denote the interpretant in Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of semiotics. In Peirce’s triadic model, a sign (representamen) stands for an object in the mind of an interpreter, and the interpretant is the understanding or effect produced by the sign in the interpreter’s thought. The interpretant is not a person; it is a mental sign or sense that mediates between the sign and its object. Importantly, an interpretant can itself become a sign, generating further interpretants in what Peirce called semiosis, so sign processes can be infinite.

Peirce distinguishes several kinds of interpretants: the immediate interpretant (the sign’s direct sense in the interpreter), the dynamic interpretant (the evolving thought or reaction elicited by the sign), and the final interpretant (the eventual, more stable understanding that would guide future interpretants). The final interpretant is often described as the goal or end result of semiosis.

Interpretantti is central to semiotic analysis because it captures how signs acquire meaning through interpretation rather than by intrinsic essence alone. In practical terms, it explains why different interpreters may derive different meanings from the same sign, and how signs propagate through culture as interpretants generate new signs. This concept underpins diverse applications in linguistics, philosophy, anthropology, and communication studies within Finnish scholarly contexts.
