Internoder

Internoder is a rarely used variant in botany for the concept known as an internode. In standard plant morphology, the stem segment between two consecutive nodes is called an internode. The term internoder may appear in older literature or as a transcription variant, but internode is the preferred and widely accepted term in contemporary usage.

The internode's length and characteristics vary among species and growth conditions. This segment influences overall plant height, shoot architecture, and mechanical stability. Longer internodes can produce a taller, more elongated growth form, while shorter internodes contribute to a compact, sturdier stem. Internode elongation is affected by hormonal activity, particularly gibberellins and auxins, as well as environmental factors such as light quality and photoperiod, nutrient availability, and plant density.

Measurement and practical relevance: Internode length is routinely considered in agronomy, horticulture, and plant breeding because it affects lodging resistance, light interception, and harvest timing. In creeping or climbing plants, extended internodes can aid attachment and spread, whereas in cereals and some shrubs, shorter internodes contribute to stability and dense canopies.
