In an intermediarydriven model, these actors influence terms, risk allocation, and access, rather than leaving arrangement optimization solely to producers or end users.

Key features include information mediation, where data is collected, normalized, and repackaged; governance and trust mechanisms that reduce transaction costs; network effects that increase the value of participating; and business models based on fees, commissions, or access charges. Intermediaries may perform financing, logistics, or curatorial functions to align diverse participants.

Intermediarydriven patterns appear in supply chains (wholesalers and freight forwarders coordinating flows), financial markets (broker-dealers and payment rails shaping liquidity and access), digital platforms (marketplaces and app stores curating offerings), and data ecosystems (data intermediaries controlling access under consent and privacy rules). They also arise in policy and standardization efforts where a central actor coordinates interoperability.

Benefits of intermediarydriven models include efficiency gains from scale, improved trust and risk management, and faster market access for participants. Potential downsides include increased market power concentration, opaqueness of terms, bias in curation, risk of single points of failure, and concerns about privacy or exclusion of smaller participants. Understanding the balance is key in evaluating such systems.
