The most common methods fall into several categories. Partial‑fraction decomposition breaks rational functions into simpler fractions that can be integrated term by term, while trigonometric substitution handles integrands containing square roots of quadratic expressions by representing them via trigonometric identities. In more advanced settings, methods such as integration by trigonometric identities, Weierstrass substitution, and series expansion may be employed.

Some integrals have no elementary antiderivative and require special functions, where the integral is expressed in terms of functions such as the error function, gamma function, or elliptic integrals. In computational contexts, numerical integration methods—such as the trapezoidal rule, Simpson's rule, and Gaussian quadrature—are used when analytic solutions are infeasible.
