Installaatioilla

Installaatioilla is a term used in Finnish discourse to describe installation artworks and the practice of installation within the visual arts. An installation refers to a complete environment or spatial situation created by assembling objects, materials, sound, light, video, performance, and other media within a chosen venue. Installations are often site-specific, designed for a particular space, and intended to transform how viewers experience that space. They are typically immersive and may require viewers to move through, around, or within the work.

Characteristics include site specificity, temporality, and cross-media experimentation. Installations can be temporary or permanent, gallery-bound or public, and they frequently encourage interaction or participation, though not all installations rely on audience involvement. Media can include sculpture, architecture, video, sound, lighting, and digital technologies; the boundaries between disciplines are commonly blurred.

Historically, installation art emerged in the 1960s and 1970s as artists sought alternatives to traditional sculpture and painting. Influences came from conceptual art, environmental art, and performance-based practices. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, installations became a global mainstay of museums, galleries, festivals, and public spaces, ranging from intimate rooms to vast architectural environments. Notable examples include Olafur Eliasson’s immersive environments and Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms, which exemplify the breadth of scale and media in installation practice.

Conservation and documentation present challenges, given the site-specific and often ephemeral nature of installations. Practitioners rely on detailed notes, photography, and video records to preserve the work’s memory and context.
