Instabilitet

Instabilitet, also known as instability, denotes lack of stability in a system where small disturbances fail to damp out and instead lead to a qualitatively different state. Instabilitet is context-dependent and can be transient or persistent.

In physical and engineering contexts, instability refers to phenomena that move a system away from an equilibrium configuration. Examples include buckling of columns under compression, flutter of aircraft wings, and thermal or chemical instabilities in reactive flows.

In economics and social sciences, instability describes fluctuations and disruptions in markets, institutions, or governance. Financial instability may arise from leverage, contagion, and sudden shifts in expectations; political instability can involve governance weakness, social unrest, or policy reversals.

In mathematics and dynamical systems, instability is analyzed via stability theory. An equilibrium is unstable if perturbations grow over time. Tools include Lyapunov functions, eigenvalue analysis, and bifurcation theory.

Mitigation and stabilization involve design margins, damping, feedback control, and regulatory measures to prevent or absorb perturbations and enhance resilience.
