Insectencelsystemen, often translated as insect cell systems, are a type of expression system used in biotechnology. They leverage the cellular machinery of insect cells to produce recombinant proteins. These systems are particularly valuable for the production of complex proteins, including those with post-translational modifications, which can be challenging to express in bacterial systems.

The most common insect cell lines used are derived from the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda. These cells are typically grown in suspension cultures, allowing for large-scale production. The genes encoding the desired proteins are introduced into the insect cells using baculoviruses, which are insect-specific viruses. The baculovirus acts as a vector, delivering the gene into the host cell and directing the cell's machinery to synthesize the foreign protein.

Insect cell systems offer several advantages. They can perform many of the complex protein folding and modification steps that occur in mammalian cells, leading to functionally active proteins. This makes them suitable for producing therapeutic proteins, enzymes, and antibodies. Furthermore, insect cell cultures can be maintained under relatively simple and cost-effective conditions compared to mammalian cell cultures.

However, insect cell systems also have limitations. They may not always replicate the precise post-translational modifications found in mammalian cells, which can be critical for the function of some proteins. Additionally, the efficiency of protein expression can vary depending on the specific protein and cell line used. Despite these limitations, insect cell systems remain a powerful and widely adopted tool in biopharmaceutical research and production.
