Innehållsleveransnät, often abbreviated as CDN (Content Delivery Network), is a geographically distributed network of proxy servers and their data centers. The goal of a CDN is to provide high availability and performance by distributing the service spatially relative to end-users. CDNs serve a large portion of the digital content delivered to internet users today, attempting to minimize latency by delivering web content from a server close to the user's geographic location.

When a user requests content from a website that uses a CDN, the request is routed to the nearest edge server in the CDN's network. This edge server, which has cached a copy of the requested content, then delivers it to the user. This process significantly reduces the physical distance the data has to travel, leading to faster loading times for web pages, images, videos, and other digital assets.

The benefits of using a CDN include improved website performance, reduced bandwidth costs for the origin server, increased content availability, and enhanced security through features like DDoS mitigation. CDNs are essential for modern web applications, streaming services, and e-commerce platforms that rely on delivering content quickly and reliably to a global audience. They work by strategically placing copies of website content on servers located in various data centers around the world.
