Injektiopaikat are locations on the body where medications or other substances are administered via injection. The choice of injection site depends on the type of medication, the volume to be injected, the desired rate of absorption, and the patient's physical condition. Common injection sites include the deltoid muscle in the upper arm, the vastus lateralis muscle in the thigh, the ventrogluteal muscle in the hip, and the subcutaneous fat tissue.

Intramuscular injections, which deliver medication into a muscle, are typically used for larger volumes of medication or drugs that are poorly absorbed in fatty tissue. The deltoid muscle is suitable for small volumes, while the vastus lateralis and ventrogluteal muscles can accommodate larger volumes. Intramuscular injections generally allow for faster absorption than subcutaneous injections.

Subcutaneous injections deliver medication into the fatty tissue just beneath the skin. This method is often used for medications like insulin and heparin, which are absorbed more slowly than intramuscular injections. Common subcutaneous injection sites include the abdomen, upper arms, and thighs. The needle is inserted at a shallow angle to ensure the medication is deposited in the correct tissue layer.

Intradermal injections, where medication is given into the dermis, the layer of skin just below the epidermis, are used for small volumes and specific purposes, such as allergy testing or administering certain vaccines. These sites are typically on the forearm.

Proper site selection and administration technique are crucial to ensure medication effectiveness, minimize discomfort, and prevent complications such as infection, nerve damage, or tissue damage. Rotation of injection sites is often recommended, especially for individuals requiring frequent injections, to prevent lipohypertrophy, a buildup of fatty tissue at the injection site.
