Inhibitiovyöhykkeet, a Finnish term that translates to inhibition zones or inhibition areas, refers to regions where a specific substance or process prevents or hinders the growth or activity of something else. This concept is widely applied in various scientific fields, particularly in biology and chemistry.

In microbiology, an inhibition zone is observed in agar diffusion assays. When an antibiotic or antimicrobial agent is placed on an agar plate inoculated with bacteria, it diffuses outwards. If the agent is effective against the bacteria, a clear area around the disc or well where no bacterial growth occurs will form. The size of this inhibition zone indicates the susceptibility of the bacteria to the antimicrobial agent. Larger zones suggest greater sensitivity, while smaller or absent zones indicate resistance.

Beyond microbiology, the term can be used in ecology to describe areas where the presence of one species negatively impacts the growth or survival of another, often through competition for resources or the release of inhibitory chemicals. In materials science, inhibition zones might refer to areas on a surface where a coating prevents corrosion or other forms of degradation.
