Ingenia

Ingenia is a genus of birds in the family Threskiornithidae, which includes the ibises and spoonbills. The genus contains two species, the African sacred ibis (Ingenia africana) and the Australian sacred ibis (Ingenia phoenicea). Both species are known for their vibrant plumage and distinctive calls.

The African sacred ibis is native to sub-Saharan Africa, while the Australian sacred ibis is found in Australia and New Guinea. Both species are medium-sized birds, with the African sacred ibis being slightly larger. They have long, down-curved bills and long legs, which they use to probe for food in shallow water.

Ingenia species are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of items including insects, crustaceans, and plant material. They are often seen in pairs or small groups, and are known for their elaborate courtship displays. The African sacred ibis is considered a species of least concern by the IUCN, while the Australian sacred ibis is listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting.
