Infuusiosetti (infusion set) is a sterile, single-use medical device used to deliver intravenous fluids, medications, or nutritional solutions from an external source to a patient via a venous access point. It is designed to connect a fluid bag or bottle to a patient’s intravenous catheter or cannula, enabling controlled administration of therapies.

A typical set consists of a sterile spike that punctures the IV fluid bag, a drip chamber to prevent air entry, flexible tubing, a roller clamp or flow regulator, and a connector that attaches to the patient’s IV catheter. Many sets include an injection port or Y-site for administering medications without disconnecting the line, and some use Luer-lock fittings to secure connections. The exact configuration can vary by intended use and manufacturer.

Usage and types: Gravity infusion sets rely on gravity to deliver fluids, while syringe or elastomeric pump sets provide more controlled, portable administration. Sets vary in length and bore size, and may be vented or non-vented. Special pediatric or neonatal sets may have smaller volumes and connectors suited to smaller veins. Some systems are designed for continuous infusions, while others accommodate intermittent dosing.

Safety and operation: They are intended for single-patient use and must be handled with aseptic technique. The line is primed to remove air, and the rate is adjusted with a roller clamp or controller. Clinicians assess medication compatibility, monitor for infiltration or phlebitis, and watch for adverse reactions during infusion.

Storage and disposal: Stored in sterile packaging and used before the expiry date. After use, infusion sets are disposed as medical waste in accordance with local regulations. Reuse is not intended.

Regulation and standards: Infusion sets are regulated medical devices in many countries. They typically bear sterilization indicators, labeling, and regulatory approvals such as CE marking where applicable. Selection depends on clinical setting, patient needs, and the type of IV therapy.
