Infrapunalähet, or infrared transmitters, are devices that emit infrared radiation. This radiation falls within the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is invisible to the human eye. Infrared light has a range of applications, including remote controls, thermal imaging, and short-range communication.

Remote controls are a common example of infrapunalähet in everyday use. Devices like televisions, DVD players, and air conditioners utilize infrared LEDs to send commands to their respective receivers. The remote emits a unique pattern of infrared pulses, which the device decodes to perform a specific function. This method of communication is effective for line-of-sight operation and is generally inexpensive to implement.

In thermal imaging, infrapunalähet are not directly used to transmit information, but rather the cameras used detect the infrared radiation emitted by objects. This allows for the visualization of temperature differences. Applications range from industrial maintenance, where heat leaks can be identified, to medical diagnostics and night vision technology.

Short-range communication is another area where infrared technology is employed. IrDA (Infrared Data Association) protocols were once popular for transferring data between devices like mobile phones and computers, though they have largely been superseded by wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Infrapunalähet can also be used in security systems for detecting motion or in simple signaling applications. The effectiveness of infrared communication is dependent on the absence of obstructions between the transmitter and receiver.
