Inflektiona2

Inflektiona2 is a theoretical framework for analyzing inflectional morphology in natural languages. It presents a unified, feature-driven approach intended to describe how words change form to express grammatical meaning, and how those forms relate to syntactic structure. The system is designed as an extension of a prior model, Inflektiona1, with added emphasis on cross-linguistic variability, irregular morphology, and diachronic change.

Core concepts of Inflektiona2 include a two-tier representation: a lexical level that stores base forms (lemmas) and a paradigm level that encodes inflectional slots across grammatical categories. Inflectional forms are generated by applying parameterized rules, or inflektion functions, to a lemma and a given bundle of features. Feature sets typically cover person, number, tense, aspect, mood, and voice for verbs, and case, number, gender, and definiteness for nouns and adjectives. Irregular forms are modeled through exceptional entries or specialized rules that can override default paradigms.

The framework supports both generation of surface forms and analysis of observed inflectional data. It is compatible with computational morphology tasks, such as automatic lemmatization, part-of-speech tagging, and grammar induction, and is used to compare morphological systems across languages. Inflektiona2 also enables documentation efforts for lesser-studied languages by providing a transparent scheme to encode paradigms and their historical changes.

History and status: conceived by researchers in the field of morphological theory in the late 2010s, Inflektiona2 has undergone iterative refinements to improve coverage of irregularities and integration with parsing pipelines. It remains a working model used in theoretical studies and language technology development.
